How to choose tungsten electrode?

Nov 09, 2023

Choosing the right tungsten electrode is crucial for TIG (argon arc welding) welding. Here are some tips to help you choose the right tungsten electrode to ensure your welding quality is optimal:

1. Understand the characteristics of argon arc welding. TIG welding requires a very clean and gentle arc, and is a high-precision welding method. Choosing the right tungsten electrode can help you achieve high quality welding.

2. Type of tungsten electrode. There are three main types of tungsten electrodes: pure tungsten (green), lanthanum Tungsten 2% (blue), lanthanum tungsten 1.5% and 2% thorium tungsten, each with its own conditions of use and properties.

- Pure tungsten electrode is suitable for welding aluminum, magnesium and other easily oxidized metals. However, because pure tungsten electrode is not resistant to high temperature, it is easy to fuse. Therefore, it is generally not suitable for high current welding.

-2% lanthanum tungsten electrode is suitable for most welding materials, especially steel and alloys. This is one of the most commonly used types of tungsten electrode.

1.5% lanthanum tungsten and 2% thorium tungsten electrodes are more suitable for high current and high temperature welding, such as in the processing of hard metals and stainless steel.

3. Select the correct specifications. Tungsten electrodes come in different thicknesses and lengths. The correct selection of electrode size and shape is essential to achieve accurate welding quality. Electrodes that are too thick or too thin may result in uneven welds or unstable arcs.

4. Dc or AC. When DC welding, pure tungsten electrode is required. However, in AC welding, any type of tungsten electrode can be used. However, when choosing the converter electrode, you need to choose the tungsten electrode type according to the material to be welded.

In SUMMARY:

When choosing a tungsten electrode, first consider the material to be welded and the applicable conditions of the tungsten electrode. You should choose the right electrode type and specification to ensure high quality welding results and ensure your work safety. Choosing the right tungsten electrode is a highly technical job, but with the right knowledge and guidance, you will be able to choose the right electrode and complete the welding job successfully.
